USING LIBRARY COMPUTERS
The library’s purpose
in providing computers and Internet access is to expand and enhance
the library’s research and information services. Online reference
resources that are produced by authoritative sources provide
excellent, current, and reliable information. NC LIVE and Encarta are
examples of these.
In addition, there is
much information available on the Internet that is not subjected to
any sort of quality control. The library cannot vouch for the
accuracy, value, appropriateness, or continued availability of
materials found on the Internet. Our librarians will gladly assist
you in determining the reliability of the information you find, and in
helping you find reliable resources.
To Use a Library
Computer:
-
Present your library card at the
circulation desk. You must not have overdue materials or
outstanding fines. Visitors and temporary residents may request a
guest card.
-
Read our policy, and sign the
Acceptable Use Agreement. By your signature, you agree to
use the library’s computers and connection to the Internet only for
purposes consistent with the library’s purpose in providing them.
-
If you are under age 17, you and your
parent (or legal guardian) must sign a
Parental
Permission for Internet Access statement in person at the
library.
-
Sign in on the daily log. You may be
asked what you want to use the computer for, in order to match you
with a computer that has the programming you need.
-
You will be allotted a 60-minute block
of time on the computer. Additional time may be allowed if no other
person wishes to use the computer at the end of your initial block
of time. A daily limit of 2 hours may be imposed. Students
enrolled in online educational courses may arrange for longer blocks
of time to do their coursework by showing proof of enrollment.
Measures will be
employed to block inappropriate visual images from being retrieved on
the library’s computers. However, no such measures are failsafe.
Conversely, such measures may block useful information. The library’s
goal in employing such measures is to strike the best balance possible
between the public need for information and the community expectation
for protected use for minors.
Adult users (age 17
and above) may request unrestricted access to the Internet for
research and informational needs.
USE OF LIBRARY
COMPUTERS WILL BE DENIED TO USERS WHO MISUSE EQUIPMENT OR USE THE
LIBRARY’S INTERNET CONNECTION TO ACCESS INAPPROPRIATE SITES.
For rules and
limitations, please ask at the circulation desk for a copy of our full
policy.
PRINTING:
Printing capability
will be provided for each public workstation to the extent possible.
Black-and-white printing will be the default option, but patrons
needing color prints may request them. Charges for black-and-white
printouts and for color printouts will be posted. Users are advised
to use the “print preview” feature to avoid printing unwanted pages.
Charges will be based on the number of sheets emerging from the
printer. |
